Districts Personify Downtown Durham
For years, residents and organizations like DCVB have referred to various parts of Downtown by the name of various districts. Now, Downtown Durham Inc. has worked with groups to shape and formalize these references so they are more consistent. In time, as the Office of Economic and Employment Development implements the Downtown Master Plan, the districts will be symbolized on new pedestrian signage. The Central Park District street signage is complete. The selection of red, instead of the usual green, makes the signs stand out. DCVB will begin immediately to identify the districts on visitor literature, maps and web sites. The districts are defined as:
CITY CENTER - bounded by Mangum Street on the east and the downtown loop on the west, including the Durham Civic Center, arts and entertainment venues and the business district.
GOVERNMENT/SERVICES DISTRICT - east of Mangum Street.
AMERICAN TOBACCO DISTRICT - south and southwest of the City Center surrounding the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, the Old Bull National Landmark and the former Lucky Strike Factory.
WAREHOUSE DISTRICT - west of City Center, extending to Duke Street on the west and the railroad tracks to the south including City Place, West Village, Measurement Inc. and the Liggettproperties.
BRIGHTLEAF DISTRICT - area surrounding Brightleaf Square west of Duke Street and north of Chapel Hill Street.
CENTRAL PARK DISTRICT - north of City Center, between the Warehouse and Government districts.
In addition, the Durham Police Department implemented a new fifth patrol district in February. Headed by Captain Terry Mangum, the Central Police District will cover Downtown Durham, Duke East Campus, the Ninth Street District and Erwin Square.
